Detail shot.

Believe it or not, his face really is as bulbous and misshapen as it appears in the stone. It’s not a perfect portrait by a long way though - if anything I made him more symmetrical than he actually is. And that nose was great fun to model but a hell of a challenge to carve.

Better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, though checkered by failure, than to rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in the gray twilight that knows neither victory nor defeat.

Thank you! :)
I made the clay head from a live model, then cast it in plaster and carved the stone from the plaster. I think the clay modelling and plaster casting took around 25 hours, and then the carving took about 200 hours.

Thank you! It's not of anyone people would recognise, he's just a model we got into the studio to work from. He was chosen cause his face is so unusual - big beard, big nose and so on.
