Artist's Comments

This is a 1/4 scale maquette which I'll be carving full size in the Lake District this summer. Well, I'll be starting it this summer anyway. The stone is andesite; softer than granite but not by much so it'll probly take a few visits.

The site is a huge outcrop of rock at the top of a hill in a forest, near the cottage I'll be staying at but off the public paths. I'll show photos of the finished carving but I'm not going to advertise its location. The idea is to communicate across generations, maybe over hundreds or even thousands of years depending how the climate of the country changes. It's clear that wind and rain have had little effect on the riven surfaces of exposed stone since the end of the last ice age, but at the bottom of the valley they've been scraped smooth by glaciers.
My hope is that someone out walking in the next millennium might stumble across an ancient sculpture by some unknown carver. Maybe even be touched by the vast gulf of time between us.

What stands out to me about Torso v2 by ~tecciztecatl is the wonderful contrast created by the partially visible torso against the tough, abrasive looking stone that surrounds it. Almost as though the occupant is emerging from the stone slow, bit by bit. (Featured by ^Thebuild)

Thanks mate. One month to go before I travel up north to get started :D

I love the thought you put behind this and the carving itself is just exquisite. Any chance you'll post pictures of the completed version, out in the wilderness?

I'm surprised your work has gone so unacknowledged by this community. It's a shame.

Well, at least you have one more watcher now.

I'll definitely be putting pictures of it up when it's done, maybe some in progress shots as well to show people how the area looks. I leave on the 5th july so it won't be long now.

And thank you so much for watching :)

Thanks! I got back a few days ago, but it didn't quite go to plan. There was a LOT of very hard stone to remove, from an awkward position (balanced on a 40 degree slope...) so I'm going to go back next year with a cordless angle grinder.

I did get some carving done though: a ram's head close to the original site: I'll put up some photos of the wax model soon, and hopefully I'll finish it off in september.

why dont you let it stay just like this?? i love it that way!!
:icontecciztecatl:
Oh I will carve it as close to the model as I can, I just decided to do a much smaller carving nearby to get accustomed to the stone. It's hard but also very brittle compared to most stones so the only way to get a good clean surface is to cut it away in very thin layers at a time. Otherwise you get big chunks breaking away randomly :( When it's polished up it'll be a beautiful deep blue-green so I don't want any gaping holes to spoil it.

This is beautiful work. Its simplicity of form draws the viewer in.

Thanks :) It doesn't have the well defined muscles you see in most male figurative sculpture but I kinda like that. It's not often you see vulnerability in a male sculpt. I was really trying to get the feeling of the weight of the ribcage pushing through from under the flesh. You can't see from this view but the side view shows that the figure is arched back, stretching the abdominal muscles out and pulling the skin taut over the ribs.
